Nathan Norton

This month, we feature one of our most energetic and probably our skinniest employee, Nathan “Nate” Norton. If you’ve been to our Houston store, you may have talked to Nate and chances are he left a lasting impression on you. We invited Nate to tell us a little more about himself, his move to Texas and passion for the outdoors.

My name is Nate and I have been working for ACK in Houston for about a year. Before moving to Houston I lived in Northern California where I grew up always being outdoors and participating in activities such as camping and hiking in the summer and skiing and snowboarding in the winter. I eventually moved to Houston to be closer to my grandparents and to concentrate on finishing by bachelor’s degree in biological sciences.

Since moving here I have found ways to stay outside and live the active life-style that I was used to. Because of the lack of snow and mountains in Texas, I have gravitated toward the water where I kayak, stand up paddle and fish. Kayaking is super fun, allows me to explore an area efficiently and get up-close and personal to nature. What has sparked my passion for kayaking and stand up paddleboarding is the volume of knowledge that can be attained. To be able learn something new every time I go out, whether it relates to kayaking or our natural environment is simply priceless. Stand up paddling is an awesome workout and is way different from anything else I have done. Both have an impressive amount of gear to choose from as well as design styles that keep my interest everyday I come to work. Have you ever heard the expression “the more you know the more you don’t know”? This describes my experience with kayaking and standup paddling and is driving me to learn more about the sport.

Working in the Houston store has been a blast. Since I started, I have had the chance to meet a lot of cool people through our store and all the shows and events that we participate in. The International Boat Show and the Houston Fishing Show in particular. It has been very rewarding thus far working with our customers and the Houston staff and I look forward to meeting you, the reader, and anyone else that shares the passion for the outdoors soon.

Nate is terrific! I came into the store last year planning to buy the least expensive kayak since I was a total beginner. Nate showed me some better options and got me completely equipped with a kayak and gear I’m still enjoying.
