ACK is proud to be associated with a local non-profit organization called the CORE Health Foundation which you may have remember us talking about back in February. They are behind the development of an ADA Wheelchair Accessible Fishing Pier on Lady Bird Lake here in heart of Austin, Texas. This weekend, we’ll be attending and supporting the cause at the Special Needs Family Fishing Event on Lady Bird Lake, a fun filled event which will benefit the pier project which has already raised over $250k. Below is a press release outlining all the details. We look forward to seeing you there!
Austin, Texas (September 4, 2012) – Local non-profit organization, CORE Health Foundation, today announced the “Accessible Fishing for All Celebration” event to celebrate and benefit the ADA Wheelchair Accessible Fishing Pier project on Lady Bird Lake.
The event will take place on September 29th, 2012 from 9am-12pm and is open to the general public. Attendees can expect to participate in a variety of family friendly activities including casting lessons, catch and release fishing, environmental education activities, a silent auction, awards and games. Supporting sponsors, vendors and other organizations will be on location including Texas Parks and Wildlife and the Colorado River Foundation. The LaRue’s will provide musical entertainment and refreshments will be provided at the event.
Nicole Harmon, Executive Director of the CORE Health Foundation, said that the purpose of the Accessible Fishing for All Celebration is to highlight the abilities of individuals with special needs in the great outdoors.
“Our mission is to remove barriers and biases for individuals with cognitive and mobility impairments through healthy activities that encourage inclusion in the Austin community,” said Nicole, “this event will not only emphasize those goals but will also help generate additional interest and support of the ADA Wheelchair Accessible Fishing Pier project.”
The CORE Health Foundation’s goal is to build an ADA Wheelchair Accessible fishing pier that will allow every angler, regardless of ability, to take advantage of the unique fishing opportunities Lady Bird Lake has to offer, without the need of a boat. The partially covered, lighted pier will be located along the Lady Bird Lake Hike and Bike Trail near Capital Metro routes with accessible parking. To date the foundation has raised over $250,000 towards the ultimate goal of $400,000 to help fund the project. Sponsorship opportunities for both the event and project are still available.
